Garbage collection
History
Garbage collection was invented in 1927 by John W. Hammes. He was an architect who works in Racine, Wisconsin. After eleven years of development, the company put its InSinkErator disposer on the market in 1938.
In many cities in the United States in the 1930s and the decade 1940 the municipal sewage system had regulations prohibiting running food waste (garbage) in the system. InSinkErator invested considerable effort and was a great succeeded in convincing many localities to rescind these prohibitions. Many localities mandated the use of shredders. For many years, garbage disposals were illegal in New York due to a perceived threat of damage to the sewerage system of the city. After a study of 21 months with the Department of the Environment of New Protection York, the ban was revoked in 1997 by local law 1997/071 which amended section 24-518.1, NYC Administrative Code. In 2008, the city of Raleigh, North Carolina sought a ban on the replacement and installation of garbage disposals that extends to outlying towns sharing system City municipal wastewater, but lifted the ban a month later.
Garbage disposal units became popular in the kitchens of America 1970 and 1980. In the U.S. 47% of households had disposal units in 2007, but in the UK this was only 6%.
Extension Geographic
Garbage disposal units are widely used in North American households, but much less commonly used elsewhere. In nations with easy access to water and an industrial base, these devices are generally permitted.
In Sweden, some municipalities to encourage the installation of crushers in order to increase biogas production. Some local authorities in Britain subsidize the purchase of garbage disposal units in order to reduce the amount of waste to landfills.
The justification for garbage disposals
Food scraps between 10% and 20% of household waste, and is a component problem municipal waste, the creation of public health, sanitation and environmental problems at every step, from internal storage and collection based followed by by truck. Burning waste facilities in energy, water with high content of food waste does not generate energy, buried in landfills (a method now was abolished in the EU), food scraps decompose and generate methane, a potent greenhouse gas, initially 21 times more potent than carbon dioxide carbon, and after many years to decompose into carbon dioxide and water.
The premise behind the proper use of a disposal regarding actually the remains of food in liquid form (an average of 70% water, and human waste), and use existing infrastructure (sewers and treatment plants wastewater) for management. The modern sewage plants are effective in processing organic matter suspended in fertilizer products (known as biosolids), with advanced facilities, including the capture of methane for energy production.
Operation
The parts of a garbage disposal.
A high torque, electric motor insulation, usually rated watts 200 750 (for 1 horsepower) for a domestic unit, spins a circular plate horizontally mounted above it. Induction motors spin at 1,4001,800 rpm and has a starting torque commutator motors rotate at higher speeds (rpm approximately 2800), have high starting torque, and are generally lighter. However commutator motors are noisier than induction motors, in part because of the speed higher and partly because the brushes rub collector slotted armor. The higher starting torque of the apparatus with a permanent magnet motor ensures in most cases there will be no blockade.
The added weight and size of induction motors may be cause for concern. Many models have some degree of soundproofing.
The plate is surrounded by a ring fragmentation, which has sharp slots. The food waste sits on the turntable and by force centrifuge is forced to its perimeter and the ring fragmentation. The plate has a number of small hammers lugsimilar turn attached to its topsidehich help to forcing the waste through the shredder. Except for special models, most food waste disposers are no sharp blades or scissors.
A garbage disposal from above the grinding chamber can be seen when it is removed from the pool.
Waste is placed in a chamber above the turntable and drops on the plate. The chamber may have a rubber partial closure through which waste can be pushed while the cutlery and other falling objects, but essentially the camera is open at the top, and no access to the turntable. This is useful in the case of a jam: The dish can be forced round by pushing with a spoon wooden handle or similar object until the jam clears. Waste that can not be ground successfully can be manually removed.
Most units are continuous-feed type, allowing waste to be added that the unit operates. Batch feed models are also available with a lid must be locked before the operation, making it impossible to operate the machine when a user tries to clear the jam by the hand and covered to prevent, etc. fall in.
Some domestic assignments of high-end commercial and also have a spinning blade undercutter below the turntable and chops the waste of land, including the fibrous material can cause a blockage of drainage finest. These assignments can handle fibrous waste such as artichoke leaves, unsuccessfully ground in a standard layout.
waste disposal can block, but usually can be cleared either by forcing the round plate from above or turning engine with a hex key inserted into the motor shaft from below. Hard objects accidentally or deliberately introduced, such as metal cutlery, can damage the unit disposal of waste and damage themselves. More problematic is plugging the drain caused by the shredded waste that is fibrous (artichoke leaves) or starch (Potato peelings).
Some high-end units have automatic reversing. Using a bit more complicated centrifugal starting switch, the engine split-phase rotates in the opposite direction to the previous run each time Windows starts. This can eliminate minor jams, but states that it is unnecessary by some manufacturers: most since the late 1970s disposal units have swivel impellers that render the investment.
There was another type of collection unit garbage works with water pressure instead of electricity, while the unit is still frequently cited in various articles and search the web, has not been available commercially since the early 2000's and the manufacturer went bankrupt in 2007 again. Instead of rotating ring and grinding described above, a machine alternative had a hydraulic drive unit with a piston oscillating blade to cut the waste into pieces attached fine. Because of this cutting action, that can handle fibrous waste. Water-powered units took longer than electric ones for a given amount of waste and the water pressure is quite necessary high to work properly. It was a great concept, but apparently not yet ready for mass production.
The cold water must be kept in operation when the sale is on to prevent damage to the leaves and wash the chopped waste without allowing it to accumulate and clog the drains. Hot water tends to melt easily-be solids flushed strips of fat, which can solidify and block the drain. Under no circumstances should oil or grease should be placed in the sink drain with or without a grinder in use.
Provision must be made for the supply and the power switch to the waste disposal unit. A conventional electric switch can be used, which requires wiring for installation presents a potential risk of electric shock if used with wet hands. An air switch offered a breath of air to operate an electrical switch away from the operator is safer. Moreover, a wireless remote control switch can be used.
If a garbage disposal is found to have a growth spurt "frozen", or a hammer that does not move freely, it is recommended that the bones of food smaller users such as chicken, through the unit. As seen in an episode of the television series as is done, InSinkErator test their units by frozen food company run through a bone sample batch of disposal units, so one need not fear damage to a unit in good condition with chicken bones, but bones and may become stuck and prevent normal use of the disposal unit. Many repair technicians recommend a weekly feeding a batch of ice cubes through a shredder to run to maintain good cleaning. This will help in keeping shoes or hammers and eliminating free rotation any buildup of mineral deposits. Never feed of glass in a garbage disposal.
The breakers are used with septic systems will join the system load, and may cause more frequent septic tanks or sewage overflow. For septic system users are special breakers available offering a system of enzymes that add claimed to assist in the degradation of food waste, while in the septic system.
Selection
A heavily corroded waste disposal above. Most teeth in the shredder ring have been destroyed. Rust on the turntable can cause the pads to break free, as shown.
Selecting a garbage disposal unit should be based on the quality and performance. The engines are relatively free of problems, and it is unlikely that an error for a reasonable life span. Metal parts in contact with the waste and water (turntable, lugs, chamber, fragmentation of the ring) are very likely corrosion, and last much longer if made of stainless steel or other similar material resistant to corrosion of steel in place of non-stainless, although galvanized. The length guarantees of the manufacturers gives an idea of the quality, but the units should last much longer than its warranty period.
The size of the camera and engine power (horsepower or watts) to determine the amount of waste treated per unit time. Soundproofing to reduce operating noise increases costs.
Induction and commutator motors each have advantages and disadvantages. Of food may be continuous or batch.
Some manufacturers use standard for all media their models, making it very easy to replace a unit by any model of the same brand.
Many standard disposal units allow a machine is connected, and some more expensive dishwashers are equipped with a small built-in garbage disposal unit, which is not necessary to scrape plates before washing.
Impact and disadvantages
Wastewater treatment plants can not easily handle the extra load of waste disposal units Kitchen. [Citation needed] The load of organic carbon that reaches the treatment plant increases, which in turn increases the oxygen consumption. The result is a higher solids. However, if the wastewater is finely controlled, organic carbon in food can help keep the bacterial decomposition running. In carbon be deficient in this process. If no wastewater treatment is performed, the additional burden of contaminants is detrimental to the environment and chemicals in waste are problematic.
It is often said [who?] That more organic waste would be better used for composting, an option is not to many inhabitants of the city without an effective system of collection. Use of garbage disposal units diverts the impact of food waste from such methods as landfills or incinerators to effluent disposal systems.
energy use is not high, typically 500-1500 watts of power used, comparable of an electric iron, but only for a short time. daily use of water varies, but is usually comparable to flushing a couple of times. A survey of these units food processing found a slight increase in water consumption.

A garbage disposal is an important place in the opening scene of 1980 Robert Redford the movie Ordinary People.
